The New Underwear Trends for 2020
Women’s underwear is a huge part of the fashion industry and has seen a number of shifts in attitudes towards the different styles over the years. In recent times, there has been a noticeable repositioning of women’s underwear in regards to how women are buying underwear.
Ladies’ knickers have become more inclusive than ever before, in its diverse styles, sizes, shapes and the models showing it off. Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty line was one of the first brands to take inclusivity to the next level, and it has certainly paid off.
2019 was a big year for some big steps forward in underwear styles, but it seems as though there is still more to come. With that in mind, here are some of the underwear trends that are likely to continue emerging into 2020.
Underwear Made by Women, for Women
There is a big push of women finally deciding on their own what underwear they like, as opposed to the whole thing being male-driven as in previous decades. This has led to many underwear brands being started up by women.
This is revolutionary for many reasons. Firstly, it means that emerging underwear styles are genuine for what women want to wear. Secondly, it means that underwear is being created for the comfort of the wearer; not just to attract the male eye!
In recent times where Victoria’s Secret has begun canceling shows, brands have quickly recognized a need to evolve their approach in marketing underwear to women.
Shapewear in Demand
There is a much bigger demand for diverse underwear styles, which has driven an increase in the likes of bodysuits and shapewear. In previous years, shapewear was seen as a way of telling women they didn’t look good enough. Now, the attitude has shifted.
Shapewear has now been marketed as a way to enhance your figure even further; the likes of Kim Kardashian’s Skims line allows you to wear clothes with confidence. Shapewear is one of the biggest trends to hit the underwear industry in years, with so many colors and styles available for every skin tone.
Functional yet Flattering
Women are looking for underwear that makes them feel both comfortable and beautiful; not one or the other. For years, women’s underwear was sexy but unrealistic and uncomfortable, or super comfortable but had to be hidden at all costs.
As women take more ownership over their lingerie drawers, underwear styles are becoming functional and flattering. This new confidence has resulted in women redefining what “sexy” is, as well as putting the emphasis back on the idea that anybody’s shape is normal.
Underwear as Outerwear
A trend that was first seen in the 90s and early 00s, underwear as outerwear has returned with a much more sophisticated edge. It just shows that the wider fashion industry has an impact on the underwear sector.
Look out for things like bra-style tops, lace slip dresses, and lace bodysuits all being worn as normal day-to-day outfits. You have probably already noticed them, with bodysuits having been a huge trend in recent years. Making women feel more embodied, they can enjoy feeling sexy and confident in underwear styles no matter the occasion or time of day.
